TRÖEGS SCRATCH SERIES PRODUCES ANOTHER STOUT WINNER
Tröegs Scratch Series #262 Chocolate Stout Abv 7.1 IBU 41
Tröegs Scratch Series #262 Chocolate Stout— Tröegs Scratch series is one of the reasons we’ve made repeated visits to the brewery recently. There are so many breweries in the greater Harrisburg area that we find ourselves in the area frequently even when the Harrisburg Senators are not playing at home. Tröegs is a quick hop off the interstate on the edge of Hershey Park and always seems not-so-far out of our way.
We tasted this creamy chocolate stout on the same night as a series of Guinnesses and although it certainly varied from the dry and lactose forward Irish stouts, it worked rather well as a sort of dessert to the range.
It’s a “chocolate added” stout – all-malt chocolate stouts can be brewed using a chocolate malt. For us, the chocolate was a bit over the top, but the quality of the beer was predictably solid. We’re often reminded, especially in Pennsylvania, that not everyone likes what we like. Those who really enjoy the sweetness of the beer should love this.
Tasting notes: The clean roasts provide a stage, but the chocolate is the show. It’s smooth and creamy, but very sweet and the chocolate eventually evolves into a Yoo Hoo chocolate drink. Ellie noted that the early chocolate frosting tastes ran more to candy as the sweetness increased as it warms. If you can find serious evidence of the 41 IBUs in here, more power to you.
Food Pairings: We’d prefer a drier stout with most savory foods, but if you grew up drinking chocolate milk with your hamburgers, you might want to give this a try. We’d prefer it as part of a dessert or a later in the evening stand-alone sipper.
