Green Flash is one of many successful western breweries who are building a physical presence in the east. The tap room at their Virginia Beach location is open now. The website isn’t crystal clear on when we’ll be drinking Virginia Flash, but it might be as soon as next week.
We’re ambivalent, of course, since a new 100,000 barrels of their beer could mean up to 100,000 barrels less of true easterners, whatever that means these days. On the other hand, it’s hard not to get excited about a tap room with 30 some Green Flash beers on tap and a chance to drink cheaper and fresher West Coast (style) beer. We met the Green Flash crew some years back and they’re good guys who have produced good beer for a long time.
The Symposium we tried definitely came from California since we had it some months ago. A big blend of earthy, spicy and moderately fruity hops is what you’d expect from a San Diego beer. Sweet malt under it all invites a return. A seven percent solution isn’t a great strategy for a night of drinking, but it’s hard to resist another of these West Coast gems. Note – drink this beer as fresh as you can get it, a task that should be easier for East Coasters in the months ahead.
