Tröegs Jovial Belgian Dubbel Shows the Brewery’s Remarkable Range
No brewery in Europe we know can produce a Belgian dubbel, a first class pilsner, and a balanced pale ale in the same facility. In and of itself it’s a very good Belgian dubbel at a fair price. When you think it comes from a brewery that also makes one of the premier pilsners in the mid-Atlantic region it’s nothing short of remarkable.
Tasting Notes: The corked bottle that holds carbonation well.
A deeply rich and fruity malt shows some cherry and woody notes along with a rich medium dark malt. Some darker cherry emerges as it drinks. The 7% alcohol for this beer is impressive — it holds its own with dubbels a couple of points higher, giving the same sort of satisfying grown-up sweetness.
Pairings: A dark, rich and sweet beer like this can hold its own with big rich stews and can also bring an extra dimension to desserts. Consider using it as an ingredient when you’re cooking the stews; don’t even think about adding water if there’s a good sweet beer around instead!
