The Story—
The Beer—
Value —
About these posts: We taste and evaluate over a thousand beers every year. The beers posted here rank in the top quarter of those tastings. Values: “fair” is a good beer at an above market price, “good” is worth the money, “very good” is a bargain, and “excellent” is a steal.
For the next several weeks we’ll feature fun places to explore beer — and much more–a different destination each week. Our beers of the day will feature beers from this wonderfully wet destinations. For the first week of April, we’re featuring some of the gems we’ve found in Virginia Beach breweries. A caveat as always: the vast majorities of craft breweries may have a few beers that are usually available, but their most interesting beers are usual season or one-off brews that we may rave about, but you can’t find. Our specific beer descriptions, can tell you what sorts of beers the brewery does well; if you don’t find the exact beer on tap, you’ll probably find something similar.

Weekend Ale Trails! Virginia Beach: Young Veterans Truce in the Forest (2016)
Date: April 4, 2019
The Story— When visiting Virginia Beach, it’s easy to get sucked into the ultra-spiffy New Realm beer showcase, or hang close to the boardwalk, and these are worth the time you’ll give them. But leave time for the periphery. Reaver Beach and Young Veterans can be done with a single Uber and return. Wasserhund is a separate trip, and, even farther afield, don’t dismiss Gordon Biersch, which has turned loose its stable of talented brewers to become independent and distinctive crafters.
But here we return to yesterday’s featured brewer, Young Veterans for today’s way-above-average craft beer. As you might expect, the founders were vets and most of the top brass is, but they hire some civilians as well and you won’t have to show military ID to get your beer here.
The style is somewhat invented. There’s such a thing as a Belgian white ale (Wit), and there’s certainly an IPA style, and now everyone recognizes that excessive versions get an “Imperial” moniker. Putting all that together isn’t common, though, but these guys make you wonder why it’s hard to find.
The Beer— Bronze gold, some wheat and some hops in the aroma with a bit of floral perfume. Soft chalk with a soft wheat and pale malt with tangy and fruity hops flavoring but not abusing the balance. Ellie was impressed with the well-hidden alcohol. This beer kept us here for another round
Value — Very good to excellent. Five and a half bucks for an American pint. I forget why we left.
