Stone Berlin Groundbreaking Collaborating #1 Arrogant Baladin Double Super Arrogant
Date: December 16, 2018
The Story— Stone became the first American Craft brewery to open it’s own European production facility in Europe two years ago when it’s long-rumored venture became a reality. To mark the occasion, Stone’s Berlin brewers collaborated with some of the most notable American and European craft brewers in a series of Magnum-bottled one-of-a-kind treasures. Each of the fourteen is crafted to taste good now and cellar well.
We found several that were brought up from the basement of Julio’s Liquors in Westborough, Mass., one of the premier beer outlets of the eastern US. Apparently the $50 price tag — much of it, we’re sure, to pay for shipping those depth charge heavy magnums across the Atlantic– was too stiff even for this crazy market. We happily forked out $20 each for a half dozen of them. (We’ll review another in the series tomorrow. The rest remain in our cellar for now, but probably not for long.
You’ll find lots of notes on Baladin if you comb back issues of the beer reviews. They were probably the most influential of the Italian craft pioneers. They’ve expanded beyond their small town origins and now run a series of beer beer outlets and a nano brewery in FICO Eataly World outside Bologna. The founder and creative force of the brewery, Teo Musso has not only exercised a great deal of influence on brewing in Italy and beyond, he’s also the creator of the Teku beer glass that is taking the craft brewing world by storm.
The Beer— Very rich, even, roast and toast. Lots of toffee and caramel. Late into the aftertaste there’s some Welch’s grape. Lots of caramel and hop bitter as it wars. From Ellie: “Huge Everything”
Value — For us, very very good. For you at $50 a bottle, still probably worth the money. When they were bringing them out at Julio’s we struck up a conversation with a rep from Black Hog Brewery who knew his beers. We agreed that $60 a bottle would probably be the asking price and even at that might be worth a bottle or two.
