Midnight Sun, Anchorage, Alaska

Second Hand Smoke Stout

  •     * Skip It
  •    ** Good Craft Beer
  •   *** Well Above Average
  •  **** Exceptional
  • ***** Top 1%
Rating: ****+  Value: ****

An 8.4% stout with 56 IBUs.   Big, rich and chocolaty, this gem starts with enough hops to give an herbal backdrop to its big rich roast.   The smoke is remarkably subtle, it’s used the way a master chef can use garlic without anyone knowing it’s there.   A hint of very black licorice as it drinks adds to the complexity.

Midnight Sun, Anchorage, Alaska
Brew-Tally Espresso Black Beer

  •     * Skip It
  •    ** Good Craft Beer
  •   *** Well Above Average
  •  **** Exceptional
  • ***** Top 1%
Rating: ****  Value: ****

A 9.7% black lager with only 17IBUs.  A huge, rich, creamy black lager with a cup of coffee and a bucket of chocolate, this is dangerously easy to drink.  Pours with a weak head, but leaves beautiful rings of brown lace as it drinks.   A sweetness that wanders in and out recalls some penny candy, but by the end the very dark roast achieves some balance even with the minimal hopping.

Alt Ale for Dusseldorf!

0 wooden keg of alt IMG_67990 outdoor drinking in Dusseldorf IMG_6781Post 0019.  March 15, 2016.      In 1977 we visited Dusseldorf for the first time and were stunned by a business we had never seen before – a restaurant that made its own beer!   It would be another five years before Yakima Brewing and Malting brought the concept to the United States, but had already had places we would call brew pubs for nearly a thousand years.

The range of beers was narrow – nearly all were some form of Alt, but that was fine with us.   The best Alts are chewy and nutty with just a hint of chocolate caramel in the malt.  Hopping varies, but always cleanses; a delicate fruitiness testifies that it’s an ale, but nothing overwhelms.

We talked about the difficulty of making a good Koelsch in an earlier post.   Ditto for the Alt style, and no surprise since it’s essentially a cousin of the truly pale ale up the river in Cologne.  We’ve talked to brewers who swear the only significant difference is the darkness of the malt, but we think it’s more complex.0 uerige brewers sign IMG_6778

Dusseldorf can be a good beer drinking destination on its own, or an easy day trip from Cologne.   The journey from the Hilton in Cologne to the brewing areas of Dusseldorf is almost as quick as the streetcar trip from the Hilton Dusseldorf—and you’ll be sleeping in the shadow of Cologne’s magnificent cathedral.  0 ellie goes for a brat in Dusseldorf IMG_6790

Much of Dusseldorf is very modern and a bit boring, but the old town has genuine charm.  We could only fit one lone wooden barrel from Dusseldorf into our book.   Here are some further views of a beautiful town with beautifully drinkable beer.

0 only a few steps from the beer IMG_6810Sorry for the posts we missed when we were trying to rework some things on the site.   I think we’re back on track now and there should be a new US-centered post by the end of the week.

The Vermonster Barley Wine aged in Bourbon Barrels

A monster indeed at 10%abv and 100 IBUs.  Yesterday we posted one of our relatively few feuds; today we agree.  In an epic battle between massive hops and woody bourbon, the bourbon wins in a split decision.   Actually, but the end the bourbon smoothes the edges enough to make it a good choice for sipping by the fire in a Vermont winter.

Anchor, San Francisco
Go West! IPA

  •     * Skip It
  •    ** Good Craft Beer
  •   *** Well Above Average
  •  **** Exceptional
  • ***** Top 1%
Rating: *****  Value: *****

A 6.7% dry hopped IPA.  Since Ellie morphed into a hop head in the 1990s, the Tuppers have rarely disagreed strongly over IPAs, but this is the exception that proves the rule.   Bob loved the huge array of hops flavors that pour over a clean malt and soft chalky yeast.  Anchor uses a blend of four American hops that Bob thought worked beautifully together. Ellie found it over the top and cheesy.  It gets the top rating because, well, Bob’s the one who enters these.   Truth in advertising:  Bob:*****  Ellie ***

What’s New Inside

Gold Metal Winning Tuppers’ Hop Pocket Ale Returns!

Join us at Dynasty Brewing on July 17 between 3PM and 8PM to savor the first batch of Tuppers’ Hop Pocket Ale in almost five years.  We’ll be there signing books at a huge discount and the brewery will be pouring the beer that was created to be “Hoppy enough for Bob and balanced enough for Ellie.”

It hasn’t been easy to resurrect Tuppers’ Hop Pocket Ale, winner of a gold metal at the GBBF in the ’90s when well hopped beers were rare and almost non-existent in the east.  We’ve collaborated with Dynasty’s head brewer Favio Garcia, the brewer who produced the last batch of Tuppers’ Hop Pocket at Old Dominion to reproduce an authentic version of the original.    Dynasty is in Ashburn, Virginia– almost within walking distance of the Old Dominion brewery that brewed the first batch just over 25 years ago.

NOW PLAYING: on Beer of the Day—  Some great beers in the San Francisco Bay area.  Scroll down below this entry to find the featured beer of the day.   >>>>>

Later — in July we resume some great weekend destinations for beer travelers that we’ve found researching our guide to breweries and inns of the Mid Atlantic.  Whether you’re looking for a turn of the (20th) century 100 year old quaint and slightly rickety hotel, an engaging B&B or a magnificent survivor of the great era of railroad hotels, we’ve found hem– within walking distance of a brewery.   We’ll present more previews of the book’s best here rolling up to Pennsylvania before we’re through.

The Story—

The Beer—

Value —

Values:  “fair” is a good beer at an above market price, “good” is worth the money, “very good” is a bargain, and “excellent” is a steal.

In mid-March we’re taking a look at the incredible variety of IPAs.   The style is by far the biggest seller among craft beers in the US and probably in Europe as well.   Even century-old breweries in Reinheitsgebot-narrowed Germany are brewing IPAs (if the brewer calls it “ale” it doesn’t have to conform to the strict purity law).   But you have to ask these days: What is an IPA”?  We’ll take a look at almost a dozen recognized and semi-recognized styles of IPAs in the next couple of weeks.

We’re often asked to share our tasting notes on over 33,000 beers; this blog is in answer to those requests.   Not all our notes, though.  The great beer writer Michael Jackson admirably followed the Thumper Rule, and we’ll try to do the same.  (“If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nuthin’ at all.”)   All the beers we post are from the top half of our ratings and most are from the top quarter.   Of greater value, we think, are the stories behind the beers,   and we try to give you enough about the brewery, the style and the places to find great beer to help you on your own beer journeys.   At CulturAle Press we try to write books and publish posts that will help you “Drink Well and Travel Safely.”
